Scenes from Small Town Coffee

If we lived in Kapa’a, Small Town Coffee would totally be our coffee shop.

Kauai Nature Color Palettes

A few color pallettes from the gorgeous plants behind the B&B where we stayed on Kauai. I really like the one with the purples!

Kapaia Stitchery, Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii

One of my important Kauai vacation preparation activities was looking up what local yarn and fabric stores I might be able to hit up on the trip, and I was super excited to be able to visit Kapaia Stitchery in Lihue!

They do not have a web site, but you can see reviews on Yelp, as well as on TripAdvisor (more reviews on TripAdvisor than Yelp, actually).

This shop is a quilter’s dream. They have tons and tons of blender kinds of prints for serious quilter types, as well as endless choices of batiks. As expected they carry a wide range of reproduction bark cloths, Hawaiian print fabrics, and Japanese fabrics as well.

They also have an interesting collection of premade items in Hawaiian fabrics and kimonos as well. They have a fair collection of Hawaiian applique kits with the pieces already cut out, and embroidery kits and canvases.

I’ll just let you browse the photos, with minimal commentary from me, and then show you what I bought at the end!

New to me – striped batiks! Had a hard time not drooling all over these, and batiks are not usually my thing.

I love this Hawaiian applique quilt and was even considering trying this technique just so I could make this project. Unfortunately, when I asked about the pattern I was told that this was a ready-made quilt that they sell, not one made from a pattern. Too bad – the turtles are adorable!

And last, but not least, my purchase. One yard of each of these two fabrics.

The print at the bottom with the lucky cats on it is from the Japanese company Cosmo Textiles. It’s a slightly heavier fabric with some texture in those hatch marks. I tried to find it on the web, but didn’t see it anywhere, and the company’s web site is in Japanese. The selvage says nothing other than the company name and the URL.

The other print is from Hawaiiprint, Inc. The selvage says “PO#73237″ if anyone wants to try to find it, but I couldn’t find this one either on the web. This company doesn’t even have a web site as far as I can tell.

I just adore both of these, but I encourage you to click over to Flickr to look at the Hawaiian print larger. The hula dancer and the volcano, the fish, coconuts, pineapples, tiki, sushi, lanterns, crabs,…it’s almost too much! My husband and I both spotted this in a quilt in the front window and then he managed to find it on the shelf. I was super excited.

And who can pass up a great lucky cat print? Not me!!

Breakfast Still Lifes with Color Palettes

We had breakfast two mornings at a place in Kapa’a called Kountry Kitchen. Delicious pancakes, and even more fun decor.
