McCoy Additions

My husband and I just took a very long weekend and spent three nights in Cambria, on California’s central coast. We rented a house all to ourselves, relaxed, went for long walks along the bluffs and beaches, did some Christmas shopping, ate some fabulous food, and did some antique shopping.

New McCoy Pots

We managed to find four new additions to our vintage McCoy pottery collection. We had never seen three of these before (the ones on the right). We have a pot just like the bulb bowl on the left, but it’s taller. We had no idea this short version even existed!

It was really unbelievable that we found this many. A bit much on the pocketbook to buy them all in one weekend, but I just couldn’t bear to pass them up! We collect any pattern of McCoy, as long as it is this color (okay, we do have a few pieces in other colors, when the mood strikes!).

But I was so busy relaxing most of the weekend that I failed to take any photos of us or the beach or the town. Though I did find some beautiful quilts that I photographed and hope to show you soon!

Too Hot to Sew

Since last you heard from me I have been either 1) working at the shop or 2) too hot to sew. This is when I really appreciate air conditioning. When I’m hot and sweating I just do not have any patience for things like screwed up tension on my machine.

I did manage to cut out two skirts last week, and I have started sewing the Lisette one — the one I did the muslin for last week. But that’s it. It has otherwise been too damn hot.

And the heat reminds me of the trips to India I made back in 2005, so I thought I’d leave you with a photo from that trip, having recently retrieved all my old photos from my backup drive and put them on my new souped-up hard drive.

This was from the third trip, when my husband went along and we took a vacation to Kerala after my business trip was done. We stayed at the Coconut Lagoon. The photo is from a motorized canoe trip on the backwaters of Lake Vembanad. So beautiful.

Oh, and Happy 4th of July to everyone in the United States!

Provincetown, Massachusetts

I had a fabulous time in Provincetown, MA, this past weekend with some of my dear college friends. There are eight of us that have been trying to get together annually from all over the country. This year only three of us made it for the entire event, and a fourth who made it for the first two days. But we’ll take what we can get!

It poured rain for two days, but the sun did eventually come out. Our back deck led directly onto the beach.

I immediately thought of all of you when I saw the inside of our beach house. Every nook and cranny held a treasure.

When the sun finally came out we decided for a long walk out to a lighthouse. Not until we got back and looked it up did we realize that we had gone over 6 miles, including 2.25 miles over a huge rock dike that we didn’t know was part of the plan we had in mind. We didn’t make it to the lighthouse, but we did great considering I was wearing a dress and sandals and one of my friends was in flip-flops. We had no idea about the dike!

Our goal -- we never made it!

As has become our tradition, we are already making plans for who will host and plan next year’s event, and we can hardly wait!

Best Birthday Weekend Ever!

Thanks to my awesome husband and some good friends, I just had the best birthday weekend ever (even though I turned 40!).

We decided kind of last minute (like the Monday before), to have friends over for pizza, beer, and cupcakes on Saturday. We had a good number of folks make it, and I had a ton of fun. Honestly, I’m usually not all that great at parties, but it was so wonderful to be surrounded by a bunch of people I know and love, instead of trying to figure out how to make chit-chat with people I don’t know. Maybe we should throw parties more often!

Then on Sunday morning, we headed south. On our way out of town we stopped at our usual local coffee shop for something to go. I mentioned to Emily behind the counter that it was my birthday and that I was officially old and she said, “3-0?” I thought that was a great way to start the day! She seemed genuinely shocked when I told her it was actually 4-0. (Later I wondered if I should be offended that she thought “officially old” was 30, but I chose to let that slide!)

Anyhow, we stopped in Gilroy to visit some downtown antique shops. We made one fun purchase (I’ll show you in my next post), and ate leftovers from the pizza party on a bench downtown. It was beautiful out and we were in no hurry and everything was just lovely!

After a few hours there we headed down to Pacific Grove (which is right next to Monterey). My husband had surprised me with a night at the Seven Gables Inn in the Seal Rocks Room. This is hands down the nicest place we have ever stayed. It’s the big yellow buildings in this photo, and our room is the one on the second floor on the right with the giant windows that overlook the beach.

And here are a couple of shots of the view from our room.

Seriously.

And even, I kid you not, the view from the bed.

So, after checking in we went down for the very nice complementary local Monterey County wine and cheese reception in the main house, followed by some hanging out in the two awesome cushy chairs in our room, overlooking the ocean. A little ocean view, a little ocean breeze through the window, a little knitting, an unexpected call from an old friend to wish me happy birthday. Fabulous.

Late afternoon knitting by the sea.

They even provided a pair of binoculars in the room so you could watch things like the local sea otters playing. They were so cute!

We had 7pm dinner reservations for Le Normandie, two blocks away. This was an absolutely wonderful restaurant. I had the duck confit which was really unbelievable. A fabulous meal and a short stroll back to the main house to pick up the evening’s complementary milk and cookie offering — brownies! Then back to the room to relax before bed.

The next morning we woke up two hours before the complementary full breakfast would be served, so we lay in bed and watched the fishing boats head out to sea. Then we finally got up and took a stroll on the beach across the street at Lovers Point. That’s the Inn on the right.

After a spectacular breakfast of French toast stuffed with strawberries and cream and other breakfast fare, including a fruit plate with strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, mango, papaya, grapefruit, watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew, we went literally went back up to the room and just hung out for the three hours we had until check out. I worked on a new knitting project, while Thomas watched the goings on out the window and took a little nap.

We did eventually have to check out, but before we left Pacific Grove, we stopped in at Point Pinos Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the west coast. A lovely spot and a beautiful day!

Sadly, it did all have to end, but I had such a wonderful weekend. I never would have thought I would say that about my 40th birthday, but it’s all thanks to a husband who was determined that I would have fond memories of this birthday for the rest of my life. Thank you, sweetheart!

My Apparent Addiction to PNCA

Guess what, my blog friends? It’s Summer of Making time again at PNCA! And this time, it’s a block printing, stenciling, and screenprinting extravaganza with Lizzie House.

You better believe I signed up for this class! This is an early start to the Summer of Making, because this class is March 25-27.

The first year of the Summer of Making I took the Improvisational Patchwork class with Denyse Schmidt. Last year, I took the Fabric Design class with Heather Ross.

I find these classes really fabulous and inspirational. It’s wonderful to immerse yourself completely in a creative endeavor for three days with no worries about anything else. And you meet some great and fabulous people in these small classes. This one promises to be filled with all kinds of fabulously messy, hands-on art-making! And on top of that, PNCA is located in the heart of Portland, which is a fabulous and inspirational place to be!

I didn’t manage to talk anyone I knew into showing up with me last year, but I’m not above trying again. So, anyone else out there tempted??? Register here!
