Birthday Backpacks

I haven’t managed to work any more on my mini quilt. My days are basically occupied with working on the top secret project we are doing at Bobbin’s Nest — to be revealed at the store on Saturday, by the way! — and reading A Dance with Dragons. I have been waiting for months for my chance at this book from the library and now that I have it, I need to get all 960 pages read within my 3-week check-out period. Because there is a wait list for it, you aren’t allowed to renew it, and they fine you for keeping it over the due date. So, I’m trying very hard to get the whole thing read within my three weeks, but it’s definitely a challenge!

Fortunately, I still have a few things from the last month or so to show you. Otherwise it would be pretty dull here on the old blog. I really need to get quilt-making!

A couple of my favorite children turned 5 recently. Which is, of course, huge, right? So, for their birthday I made them backpacks following a tutorial over at noodlehead, except for leaving out all the exterior zipper pocket stuff.

Backpack for a Pirate

These are for boy and girl twins. The girl is a pirate. This would be obvious to you if you met her. So, she clearly needed a pirate backpack. But I had a terrible time finding fabric for hers. This turned out to be perfect (except for the notable absence of any substantial amounts of pink or purple). I found this at StashFabulous on Etsy. She has more of this still, as well as some other coordinating prints that are really cute, in case you’re looking for pirates!

Backpack for a Snapper Lover

On the other hand, the boy LOVES alligators, which he refers to as “snappers” because, well, they snap at you. He was at my place for my birthday party back in May and suggested we hang the banner of Susan Beal’s that he saw lying in my sewing space. After hanging it, he declared that his favorite fabric of all of them was the Tammis Keefe snapper fabric. As this is readily available right now, how could I deny him?

I hear they have already taken them to school. A success!

For Someone Tiny

Baby Legwarmers and Matching Hat

Baby Legwarmers and Matching Hat

Baby legwarmers with a matching hat. I’ve actually started a second set as well. Seems like having babies is “in” at the moment! Details over at Ravelry.

The Hubby’s Laptop Sleeve and A Winner!

My wonderful husband recently requested that I make him a laptop sleeve. So, I whipped out my tutorial and whipped one up for him.

Thomas's Laptop Sleeve

I’ve actually used this fabric for an iPod case for him in the past (that link goes to the tutorial I have for that as well), so I thought it would be nice if everything coordinated. He went through all my vintage buttons with me and picked out those white ones. Cute, huh?

Thomas's Laptop Sleeve

This time I put the dragon fabric on the inside.

And… the winner of the Color Story Pillow from the Modern Log Cabin Quilting blog tour last week is… Betty!

My Color Story Pillow, front

Congratulations, Betty, and thanks to everyone who left a comment!

Vintage Quilt Card

I needed a card to send to someone the other day, so I went to my old stand-by of making one out of fabric (see here, here, and here).

This one was for my aunt, who is very much into old quilts. I thought I’d use some of the vintage scraps I had to make a little log-cabin sort of design, but while digging through my scraps I found this bit of hand-pieced vintage goodness and couldn’t resist.

Greeting Card made from Vintage Quilt Bit

Some days I think I should just make cards like this and sell them and skip the huge projects. These are done so satisfyingly quickly (at least in comparison to a quilt!).

Finished Linen Stitch Scarf

Woo hoo!!! It’s done!

Churchmouse Linen Stitch Scarf

And can I just say that the blocking really did wonders for this scarf, including adding a TON of length.

Churchmouse Linen Stitch Scarf

The pattern is from Churchmouse. Details on Ravelry. The yarn is Wool Candy — 80% merino superwash, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon. So lovely.

I learn something new with every project. This time I learned (among other things) not to do a knit bind off from the purl side!

I’m still madly working on the web site I’m building, but I think the gift-making and gift-buying are now complete!

Next week I’ll be spending a ton of time at the Bobbin’s Nest, so stop by if you’re in the area. Have a great weekend everyone!
