New Mosaic Quilt Layout Complete!

Final Layout of Quilt for my Mother

I finished the layout for my new quilt! So exciting! Haven’t made a quilt in ages, it seems like.

The top portion of this is missing 10 pieces in a light grey color. Figures that I have scads of fabric and end up running out of something! So, a bunch of the white spaces in the top portion will actually be light grey.

This one was requested by my mother to hang in her family room. She wanted it 2.5 by 5 feet (30″ x 60″) to fit the space on her wall. I tried a lot of possibilities and we finally came up with this mosaic, based on a photograph I took.

Anyone care to guess what the original photo was of? I’ll give you a hint — a couple of other photos of the same thing are in my photostream on Flickr, but not the exact photo I used.

Anyhow, I couldn’t fit the entire thing on my design wall because it was too wide, so I had to divide it in half. The lower half really should sit to the right of the upper half. Like this:

There will be a lot of width lost when all the seams are subtracted, so it will be the same proportions as the mosaic above that I used for the inspiration. Not sure why the pinks on the right side are showing here as kind of washed out compared to the original. They’re pretty bright in real life. I actually went and double-checked after I saw the photo!

And this is what it looked like in my sewing space after I had put the last piece of fabric on the wall.

See the mosaic on the computer there? I work off the image, matching up colors or at least the feel of it, since it’s impossible to match things up precisely.

I have no clue how many different colors I used in this. Not all of the ones you see lying around, but a huge proportion of them!

There are some really great little bits of colors together in this quilt. I think it’s really fun to look at, and I got really excited several times when I put two fabrics up next to each other. The combinations just gave off little jolts!

Now to ponder what to do for the quilting while I work on piecing it all together…..

  • Love it! I love seeing this great selection of colors together. I love seeing this progress, and I especially love seeing your “workspace.” Good to know I’m not the only one who spreads fabric all over the place like that. Just looked through your Flickr account a bit – could it be either bolts of fabric or spools of thread? Both of those looked like very cool inspiration.

  • Oh wow, I’m really loving this, although I’m not for sure what picture it’s based off. I loved your last mosaic quilt too by the way. I can’t wait to see it when it’s all backed, bound, and quilted –you always do the best quilt jobs.

  • I absolutely love all the colors! Can’t wait to see it finished.

  • Very cool. I love this technique that you use.
