I feel like I haven’t been around here much these days. Partly, I’ve been busy doing a lot of this sort of thing:

This is one of the quilts I am making to sell — well, it’s one of my samples. I’m working on the binding. I’m planning to fill you all in on how my business preparations are going at some point, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet!
In the meantime, there was a ton of fun at work today at the Bobbin’s Nest. Someone brought in some patterns of her grandmothers that she thought we might be interested in putting out for free for our customers. I hope this nice lady wouldn’t be disappointed to find out that her vintage patterns aren’t likely to get any further than the staff!
There were so many that I wanted, but I tried to be at least modestly realistic about this, so I only picked up these:
Vogue 7800
I’d love to have the sunglasses, scarf, and bracelet to go with it! This one lists double knit as one of the recommended fabrics. I think not. Originally purchased in 1972, when I was one year old!

McCall’s 3201
Will I be bold enough to make the tunic with the shorts version? Not so sure, especially since the shorts have an elastic waistband, which I don’t personally think is all that groovy.

McCall’s 7832
Okay, this is adorable. It’s described as a “brunch coat.” So, is this meant to be a coat that you would wear over something else, or a dress that is sort of styled as a coat?? I lean toward the dress option, partly because of the sleeves. Coats don’t ever have short sleeves, do they? Either way it’s really cute.

Simplicity 5844
Couldn’t resist this one either. Love the blue and white tank version!

McCall’s 2135
When I saw this one I thought it was PERFECT to do for a class at the shop. The pattern is getting very brittle, so I have already copied the pieces that were on the verge of disintegrating. Also, the instructions for this one are missing. But there is a lot of information on the pattern pieces, and we have located a pattern in a modern book that is pretty similar, so we can probably reconstruct it. It’s just so cute. Check out the embroidery on the flower and that ric-rac!

I hope it won’t be too long before I can tell you that I’ve at least attempted to make one of these, but several other things take priority over this right now, sadly. But soon!

I remember those “coat dresses” as being trendy at some point (probably in the eighties, I don’t think I’d remember if it were the seventies). I LOVE that first dress.
Love the looks of your quilt in progress – the quilting looks cool! These vintage patterns are so fun to look at. You can see some designs have come back again, sort of. I think I love that first dress too, and might even wear that, although I don’t wear dresses too much. Hope you make one of these!
first – lovely quilt, Amy!!
and wow, I love those patterns too, how sweet of that woman to pass them on. I adore the first Vogue one (I’ve seen it before… maybe it’s deep in my collection??) and I definitely have the McCall’s 7832 and it’s adorable. I haven’t sewn it yet but it’s on my list!
Hi Amy,
Just letting you know I’m still loving the blog! I vote yes on the “coat dress”. Very cool
Wow! That quilt is so cool! Did you have it quilted with those ovals or did you do it yourself? It’s such a cool quilting pattern
I too would love to know how you quilted the quilt – simply love the ovals!
love that brunch coat! fun stuff!
OH MY, those ovals are awesome! Amazing!
