It Ain’t All Wine and Roses

Just in case you thought it was. It definitely ain’t. Just to go along with all the stuff I’ve been getting done lately, let’s add this fiasco:

What bad free motion quilting looks like on the back side....

This was going to be a fairly quick project. Probably 1/5 of the stitching I had done looked like this on the back side. The rest of it wasn’t great either, and I wasn’t liking how it was looking on the front. So, it’s all coming out. Simplest project I’ve had on my list lately, of course! This is a really heavy thread (12 wt). It’s not playing nice with the free motion at all. And the top thread broke whenever I tried to bump the tension up. I’m working on not taking the hardest approach for every project these days, so I am seriously working on a Plan B. I’m not going to beat my head against this method any longer.

On a happier note, I won an awesome set of 324 embroidery floss colors from Martha at Q is for Quilter. That cheers me up!

  • I’m sorry about the problems with the stitching, I can relate, I’m thinking about making a little holder to strap to my wrist for my seam ripper!

Love all that embroidery thread! Congratulations on the win!

I hate that when that happens, when a simple project you’re excited about ends up becoming “an experiment” or just frustrating. One good thing is that embroidery thread is beautiful! Such a cool range of colors

It is totally my MO to take the hardest approach to all projects! And those colors of floss cheer me up too.

  • Gggrrr……I did that once on a small quilt for my wall! I had done tons of quilting and realised that the back was BAD!
It was my own fult as i’d forgotten to change the tension. The thought of unpicking hours and hours of quilting made me want to cry but luckily it was just going on my wall so once i’d got over the horror i just stuck it up on the wall.
I’d like to say that i won’t make that mistake again, but i probably will!!

    The embroidery threads are drool-worthy!

  • Thanks so much by your videos, I like a lot!!
I’m a beginner with quilting, I do other things with textiles, and I want to learn these techniques.

    All the best!!
