Fabric Shopping in Berkeley and San Francisco

Status update on the pants: muslin #3 was good, so I had to proceed with hunting down fabric. This is not an easy task. You would think a solid color bottom weight for casual pants would not be that hard to find, however, the nearby places did not produce, so I trekked up to the East Bay and San Francisco today!

First stop: Stone Mountain & Daughter, Berkeley
Thoughts: Great place for a little bit of everything. I’ll definitely be keeping this place in mind! Garment fabrics of all kinds, quilting fabrics, notions, buttons, yarn, all kinds of odds and ends.

Purchases: Brown pants fabric (in the background), zipper, buttons, topstitching thread, white toweling and Sublime Stitching (the last two are for making a few gifts).

Even though I found what I needed here, I decided that since I had the car I really *should* go check out those other couple of places in San Francisco, right? Right! Over the bridge to the city we go!

Second stop: Fabrix, San Francisco
Thought: I can’t deal with this place. Looks to be mostly home dec kind of stuff, but there is NO ORGANIZATION WHATSOEVER, unless “by price” counts. And there are only like 3 prices. Here are some shots, in case you’re interested.

Last stop: Satin Moon Fabrics, San Francisco (just half a block from Fabrix!) — no web site (get out!)
Thoughts: Eek! Everything is here is absolutely scrumptious. Home dec, quilting, and garment fabrics. Only the best of the best. Any bargains? I doubt it seriously, but if you want to do it right, this is a great place to start!

Eek! Liberty of London again! Even one with little happy vegetables. So cute!

Okay, I couldn’t get out of this place without buying these. MoMo Wonderland! I bought 2 yards each of the Tea Time print in Sugar and Tomato (they also had the pistachio) and of the Tweedle Dee print in Tomato. Oh yes I did! :)

This concludes our fabric shopping for the day. Please be careful as you disembark and have a lovely day!

  • I once went to a yarn store that was much like Fabrix in the sense that everything was everywhere and there was zero organisation. It made my head spin so I had to get out of there asap!

Wow, the next time I’m in the San Francisco area (wink wink), I will have to check these out. The first store looked great. I loved the quilts hanging on the wall in the second photo. I would get overwhelmed too in Fabrix. Too bad for them! And that last one looks fabby too. What a fun day with excellent purchases to show for it. Can’t wait to see more of the pants projects.

  • ooh! wish i had visited satin moon. i did go to stone mountain and daughter. that is a nice store!

  • Thanks for the shop reviews! I will definiatly have to trek up to Berkley! BTW I can’t wait to see what you to with the sublime stitching pattern. I Love that pattern.

Thanks for the info on the stores! I have two sons who live in the Bay area and will look into these stores when I go there to visit them. Years ago I went to Britex on Union Square and that was quite a trip, I hope they are still there.

  • Thanks for the info on the stores, it’s good to see before you go! Next time I’m in San Francisco, or Berkley, I’ll have to check them out. Luscious fabrics at Satin Moon!

I know what you mean by the rolls and rolls of fabric stacked up! Hard to find what you might want.

Glad to see you found some fabric for the pants. Can’t wait to see them finished.
