I warned you that you might be seeing a lot of my homework here for a while!
So, for my art class on color this week we had to do an expressive project where we pick a person or place that we know well. We had to decide what colors represent this person or place to us and then mix up paints, paint swatches of paper, cut out the pieces, and arrange them to give an overall impression of that person or place. I chose my favorite local, independently-owned coffee shop, Dana Street Roasting Company.
What I thought was interesting about this project that you all might enjoy, was that at a minimum we had to compose a 4×4 grid of at least 16 pieces of paper that all had to be touching. And it was best to keep it all to a grid, even if we did more pieces, so that we wouldn’t tear our hair out trying to get all these little bits glued down. When I read the instructions I thought, “This is just like designing a quilt!” The finished project is below. It’s actual size is 5 inches x 5 inches. And if I could ever get around to it, I’m actually thinking of making this into a small quilt (maybe 25 inches x 25 inches, something like that). Think they’d hang up the quilt at the coffee shop?? ![]()

What a fun project! This would make an awesome quilt
Amy – this sounds like such a fun art project! My creative juices are flowing with ideas! I love how you interpreted the colors of the coffee shop into you piece. I like the grid a lot too. Isn’t it fun to think of ways to use this class in your sewing projects? Great job!
Amy,
Sounds like a great class. I am always taking a class in something (right now it’s photography). Anyway, you’re project looks amazing. My bedroom walls are close to that grey/green color, and I just might use your project as inspiration for our “summer” bedding. I have been itching to change things.
Keep posting your homework!
