I recently discovered how to make my own icons for the Mac to use in place of the standard (boring!) folder icon. This has the potential to occupy a lot of my time, as it is *really* fun to do. I have created a set of 35 icons of vintage buttons from my little collection.

I am running Tiger, but I suspect these will work on any version of OS X. I am making them freely available to anyone who is interested in using them. You can download them now by clicking on the link in the sidebar that says ButtonIcons.zip (it’s just below the photo mosaic). Just unarchive the folder and you will see all the files and a pdf file with instructions on how to use them. It’s REALLY easy — just copy and paste! Unfortunately, I do not know how to make these for Windows machines.
Enjoy!

These are fantastic! Thank you for sharing! I also run Tiger on a Mac, are they easy to make … will you share how you did it? I have some buttons I’d be happy to share with you too.
When I click on the link in safari 4, it redirects me to your flickr And it freezes up firefox. I really want to get the buttons. Any other way I can?
Thanks! Those are very cool.
Cute stuff! Jon has made me a few of these icons for my mac with pictures of our cats’ head and pictures of my fiestaware. I love these buttons though
Hi, just found your blog via the Modern Quilt Along flickr group and it’s fabulous. I love your Real McCoy quilt, and your trip to vietnam and cambodia brought back memories of my trip late last year. I’m adding you to my reader… can’t wait to see what else you make!
So, you are now one of my favorite people! Seriously, I had wondered and wished I could change those icons, but I had NO idea that it could actually be done. Now, I not only know how to do it, I can use your fantastic buttons! And ditto to the part about sharing how you did it – I’d love to know how to make my own.
VERY COOL! I used a few – thank you!!

OMG–this is the most adorable thing EVER! Maybe it doesn’t take much to thrill a 55 y/o crafter and lover of buttons, but my desktop is going to be filled with a lovely assortment of colorful buttons. Thanks so much, Amy!
Oh –I’m using Leopard on my Mac.
