By Hand and Vintage Buttons

I recently finished a hand quilting class and thought I’d show the practice design with curves that I did. I’m pretty pleased, though I’m not sure I’m ready to tackle an entire quilt…

Also, my brother brought along with him some old buttons my mother found. Here are the ones that have “friends.” I *so* dig those little dogs. I think they might be bakelite.

And here are some singletons.

I think that one on the top right is maybe a little pear? So many cute buttons in here though. I’m dreaming up ways to use them. :) Might have to get Susan’s Button It Up!

  • you could totally do a whole quilt – that is beautiful!

  • Oh, those are beautiful. And, I know exactly what I would do with them! But, every time I see cool buttons, this is all I can think of!

Can’t wait to see what you do with them!

  • Wow, your handquilting stitches are beautiful! I took a class and enjoyed it but haven’t done anything with it since. I’m inspired to try again. I love your buttons. Have fun with them!

  • Your hand quilting is awesome! I did not realize until recently that people do that with entire quilts – wow! (I know, I know, but I don’t really come from a crafting/sewing family).

And that pear button is adorable. :)

  • Great buttons and definitely go on to quilt a whole quilt…you might want to try a lap size-big enough and then you get to see it in the living room rather than tucked away in a bedroom!

  • Super job on your handquilting. I collect buttons, too, but haven’t done anything practical with them. I just like to take them out sometimes and play with them. Aren’t they sweet? :-)

  • Your hand quilting looks beautiful! I’m in awe of how even and precise all your stitches are. I’m definitely inspired by your work. I so need to get brave and just do it!

What a fabulous button loot! I especially love the colors. I have always wanted to collect buttons, but I never find any good ones in the thrift stores.

Great job with your handquilting! I love the blue thread on red fabric. I took a handquilting class a couple months ago and really enjoyed it, though my hands can only handle small projects.

My mother had a tin of buttons in her sewing basket that I loved looking at when I was younger. Many of the buttons you show are familiar from then. Thanks for the memory!

  • Wow! I can’t believe you handquilted that! That sure would take a long time to finish an entire quilt top.

Your button collection is so fun! I love all the different colors and shapes

  • I’ve been trying to give you an award, but I can’t get the comment to work.

I love your blog and hope you can get this. It is the 3rd entry on my blog.

  • Fantastic first try with hand-quilting! Go on – tackle a big one (or even a medium). Set aside a little slice of time each day – you’ll find it very relaxing and meditative.

I have button envy … Jovita

  • The scottie dogs look like bakelite to me too. Super cute.
