Back to Amsterdam

I am REALLY excited to get to post about this project!

It all started here….

New project in the works

…with a lot of planning!

Too much planning!

And then moved to some house building

Building Houses

…and roof raising.

Hats for Houses

And now it has at last come to a completed top of my own design. Yippee!!

Back to Amsterdam Quilt Top

All of the houses were pieced (by machine, of course), and then the gabled roofs were machine appliqued. Many of the window fabrics were from the stash of scraps I acquired last fall. The big question now… how to quilt this???

A glimpse at my inspiration (taken by me in October of 2007)…the real Amsterdam.

Wow, Amy, this Amsterdam quilt is so amazing! I have always wanted to go to Amsterdam. What a great way to capture that photo in a quilt, which really makes me think of those houses in your photos. You could quilt 1/4 inch on the inside of the seams and around the inside of the windows.

  • That is a fantastic quilt! I love it!

  • Amsterdam is my favorite city ever, and this quilt is awesome! Great job!

  • Awesome! I think you’re going to have to actually sell your pattern now so the rest of us can create our own little Amsterdam’s as well. ;)

  • Love it. I’ve been dying to get into quilting for a couple years but..well…i dont’ have a sewing machine. I even know exactly what/how I want to do it.

When I was scrolling through the quilt pictures, I thought, “Wow, looks just like Amsterdam, cool!” And then a few seconds later I read your “inspiration” line and was like, “Oh, duh.”

    Beautiful job.

    wonderful, LOVE this quilt
I think I would have fun with the quilt and quilt little clouds in the sky and then outline the roof 1/4 inch in from the seam
and 2 straight lines vertically spaced even apart in each window sets of each house. so the lines would go thru all 3 windows and sashing of the windows…
I would probably make another house and practice what I liked to see if it worked.
by hand or machine will you be quilting this quilt?

  • This quilt is so awesome! Well done! You could sell that as a pattern…

Wow! That is stunning! I love house quilts in general and this one is lovely in its simplicity. It’s so neat to see the final product alongside your inspiration photo.

  • This is gorgeous! It’s such a unique and original design and it mimics the tops of the houses perfectly. This is so much better than what I imagined from your original photos of the buildings/window.

I have no suggestions for how to quilt this…the houses are stunning and I would be afraid to “ruin” them with quilting
