Family Quilts — My Dad's Baby Quilt

My mother has a note with this quilt indicating that it is my father’s baby quilt. Considering that my father is still alive to vouch for this, it is probably correct. If that weren’t the case, all bets would be off! This is another quilt from my Great Grandma Roloff that is hand pieced and hand quilted.

Someone commented on the Flickr photo to let me know that this pattern is called “Hearts and Gizzards.” I’m not sure where that name came from — kinda odd, don’t you think? This is a very orderly two-color quilt in great colors!

I didn’t get a shot of the backing (I’m guessing it was plain white), but the binding is a pretty scalloped edge in the same purple. The quilting runs along the inside of each of the individual pieces, helping to accentuate the pattern of the piecing. Unfortunately, this quilt has some mold damage as well. If anyone knows how to get this out gently, please let me know!

It’s nice to finally know who the baby is that goes with this quilt (unlike the other baby quilts in our family collection).

  • I love this quilt! It reminds me a little bit of the orange peel pattern. Is this quilt appliqued or pieced around the curves?

  • For the mold — try oxyclean. It’s very gentle and can get nearly anything out!

  • Oh my gosh — I am so in love with this quilt — Hearts and Gizzards has always been one of my all time favorite patterns. I’ll bet this is a pieced one (instead of appliqued). I’ve wanted to make this quilt for ages, but I’ve always felt I could not handle all those repetitive blocks, but one day I’m going to do this quilt — I swear! You have had some wonderful quilters in your family.
