Baby Quilt a la oh fransson

The baby quilt is finished. I made this quilt using the Simple Modern Baby Quilt from oh fransson. Minus the little applique, which, even though I think is really cute, I just couldn’t get into for this particular project. Or for these particular gift recipients. Just didn’t seem to fit for some reason.

Baby Quilt
The nursery theme is “safari” and they are using fairly neutral colors, from what I can tell. They are waiting to find out if it’s a boy or a girl, so even though I love the Alexander Henry 2D Zoo fabric, I had only ever seen it in the shades of blue. Until I stumbled across this version at reprodepot. I could not have been happier with this choice. I love it! I added in some Amy Butler Midwest Modern, some Sandi Henderson Farmer’s Market (I think I keep calling this “Flea Market” for some reason!), and a little Kaffe Fassett. I had a lot of fun shopping for this. I took my 2D Zoo to my local fabric store and spent about 2 hours scouring for everything I liked that I thought might work, and then figuring out which 10 fabrics to get, thinking about which would make good blocks together and all that. Fun fun fun on a Friday night! :)

Oh — and this is the first time I have done the free motion stippling on an actual project. It’s pretty fun and quick and you don’t have to think very hard, which is nice!

Baby Quilt Detail
The back is a piece of minky. This stuff is super fuzzy and super soft. It was my first time using this and I’m not sure what I think really. A little bit of a hassle, and it turned out looser on the back than I would have liked it to (it’s only attached to the front around the edges), but it should be fine.

Baby Quilt Back
And I have wrapped it in a lovely box, tied with a ribbon made out leftovers of these fabrics. So cute!

  • Very cute! That’s one very lucky baby. :) I have this pattern too, and have been curious how the minky would work on the back. Maybe a few stabilizing straight lines of quilting would help with the tenting but keep the super softness?

  • Hi, I found the same thing when attatching the quilt back only with the binding. It ends up loose and baggy no matter how well you stretch it, and even worse after its washed! So if you find out a good solution to that problem I’d love to know! Elizabeth (oh Fransson) has never mentioned her backs being loose so I wonder if she has any tricks. Cute quilt anyways I love it!!!

  • This is such a cute quilt! I really love all the fabrics that you combined. I’ve been wanting to use minky on the back of a quilt so it’s good to know about the back issues. Could you possibly tack it at each of the corners of the blocks (tie it without obnoxious yarn, but rather with a coordinating thread)?

  • Oh, I love. I can’t believe how great your free motion turned out! I am impressed.

I saw this pattern, too, and have thought of it for baby gifts (I have one coming up!). I have worked with Minky before. Although it was OK, I still wasn’t convinced I like it, same thing – the stretchiness of it.

I love the way this turned out!

I also use minke for my baby quilt backs, but I use “heat-n-bond lite” it comes in a roll at Joann’s and fuses the minke to the batting. And then I quilt through all the layers.

I have done it several times now and it works a charm for me, there are a couple pictures on my blog…

  • Hi, Amy. Your quilt turned out so cute!

I just wanted to respond to the comments about the backs being loose. There are a couple of things that can cause this. First of all, if you don’t pre-wash your batting and fabrics, they can shrink smaller than the backing. Secondly, if you’re using “off brand” Minky (like the kind they sell at JoAnn, for example) it won’t retain its shape as well. I’ve found that, when I use the Minky brand fabric, I don’t have a problem with my backs stretching.

If you’re still having problems (or if you’re wanting to use non-Minky fleece) the suggestion for tying through all layers is a good one.

    I hope this helps! :)
