Welcome to another installment of my family quilts series. Today, again, a hand pieced and hand quilted beauty from my Great Grandma Roloff (or at least guided by her, no doubt completed with the help of family and friends on the quilting). This is one of those quilts that I think took my breath away the first time I saw it. It’s incredibly simple, yet stunning at the same time. No ostentatious displays. Not even a patterned scrap of fabric to be found. But breathtaking.

These appliqued irises just make me think Spring and Easter. No doubt about it.
Please excuse the horrible photography, as usual, for these quilts. The light, space, and time constraints at my mother’s house were just not up to the challenge. And I apparently can’t tell when I am casting a huge shadow on my subject!

I love the simple border on this quilt — like the grass around the edge of a garden. And I *totally* dig those prairie points!

Here’s a single iris up close for you. The quilting is basically just outlines around the applique and then a diamond grid in the background.

And I like to give you a shot of the back, which in this case is plain muslin. You can see the lovely outline of the iris from the front.

Way to go, Great Grandma Roloff!

Wow! More great quilts. I can’t imagine the work to applique all those irises. And I love the recent star quilt too. I’m so glad you’re sharing.
I also really love the ones you just made yourself!
I can’t imagine how long it took to make this! I love irises and the applique on this is gorgeous!
This is amazing — you have so many of the quilts that I have in progress. I love the simple diagonal quilting, and now that’s just what I am going to do on mine. I am so happy to have found your blog — thanks so much for sharing all these beautiful family quilts!
