This is the first in what will be a fairly long series of posts on quilts from my family. While I was in Kentucky, I had my mother dig out all the good quilts she had that were made by my father’s grandmother (Great Grandma Roloff), my mother’s mother (Grandma Weber, the one that made our wedding quilt), and my father (yep, he’s made some quilts too!). I took a bunch of photos, all inside with a flash on a cold gray day. I’ll do my best to fix up the exposures, but you can still see the quilt patterns and the lovely vintage fabrics, I think. It’s truly impossible for me to pick my favorite. My sister and I kept saying “Oooh! I love this one too!” And to think that my aunt has another pile just as big from my Great Grandmother. There are, I would say, at least a dozen I’ll be showing you from her.
So, without further ado, here’s the first one.
This quilt is a double wedding ring made most likely by my Great Grandma Roloff. This quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted. Believe it or not, my mother has this on the guest bed FOR PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY USE! I nearly had a heart attack, but she says all the quilts my grandmothers made were for people to use. Hard to argue with the dead spirits of my German (and obstinate) grandmothers!
This is a shot of a large portion of the quilt, on the bed.

Following are a series of close-up shots so you can see some of the spectacular vintage fabrics on this. I hope they show up well enough! Click on the photos to see the larger versions at flickr where you can really zoom in on the fabrics.

Lovely scalloped edge.

The back is just a plain white muslin, but I’m hoping you can see the hand quilting pattern.

How wonderful! I’ve always loved the double wedding ring pattern. (Someday, I’m going to have to finish the one I started!) I’m looking forward to your family history series of posts… what a great way to document and remember these precious heirlooms.
so so pretty! My favorite part is the scalloped edge. I’ve always wanted to make a double wedding ring quilt, but I am way too intimidated…
How interesting that she chose a red fabric to go with the rings. I think every one I have ever seen always had a muslin fabric with the rings.
OMG! This is GORGEOUS! What a treasure!
Isn’t it pretty great how she used prints for all the different parts of this classic quilt — love the red — I’m inspired!
