I have had this on the brain to make for a while. Even got the recipe out a few weeks back and it has been sitting here looking at me. Until today. This was a recipe that my mother says my grandmother used to make all the time (same grandmother as the quilt, by the way). While I never got to eat my grandmother’s version, I have made this a few times in the past and it’s really easy and yummy. Kind of a German version of sugar and cinnamon toast, without the cinnamon.

I’ve included the recipe below nearly exactly as it was given to me. This means you should read it through all the way before you begin. So that you know you need to have the cookie sheet hot. Things like that. Also, as you can see from my pictures, I never worry about the shape of it. It’s the thinness that seems to be really important. And I will also confess that I didn’t read very closely this time and incorrectly used 6 TABLEspoons of butter instead of 6 TEAspoons of butter. Oops. But it’s still good, just very buttery. A very forgiving recipe. I did this start to finish in an hour, from heating the oven to getting everything put away and cleaned up. Easy peasy.

Platz Kuchen
Ingredients:
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
6 tsp melted butter
3 tbsp milk
1 tsp sugar
pinch of salt
flour (sifted)
For Topping:
melted butter
sugar
Directions:
Mix together all ingredients, including enough sifted flour to make a stiff dough (about 1 cup). Divide dough into four or five equal portions. Work one portion into a ball. On a lightly floured surface roll ball into a round of dough about 11″ in diameter, rolling it paper thin. Place round of dough on hot cookie sheet. Pop immediately into a 450 F oven and bake 4-5 minutes. When done to a pale golden brown and filled with blisters of varying sizes and shapes, remove from oven onto waxed paper and brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar. Break or cut into serving size pieces. (HINTS-Rolling dough to proper thinness and using hot cookie sheet are secrets of making Platz Kuchen. ALSO, do not use the settling in dish of melted butter or Platz Kuchen will be too salty.)
And just to keep you all updated, I have fixed my Business Card Keeper so that it is now functional. All I did was take off one of the pieces of velcro and sewed it back on in the right place by hand. Now it’s perfect!
And the wardrobe cocktails was a ton of fun! I scored some great new stuff (including an awesome Nike jacket that will be perfect for cool-weather biking to pilates) and met some really lovely new folks. Excellent!
I hope all of you are having a great weekend!
