At Last, a Little Sewing, but Not Much

So, I had the day off yesterday and spent basically the ENTIRE DAY doing homework. It’s kind of ridiculous, I have to say. But I’m trying to make sure I don’t miss a deadline due to our trip to KY next week.

Yes, I live an 11-minute drive (according to Google) from the Santa Clara Convention Center, but, no, I am not going to the Pacific International Quilt Festival this weekend. You just can’t do everything.

Instead, I have managed a couple of small sewing projects today so far. I’ll let you be the judge of their success. First, I hemmed a recently-purchased pair of pants
A little hemming
I promise I hemmed the other leg after these pictures were taken. I would like to have had them a little longer, but I have to be able to wear them with lower heels as well, so this was the compromise.
Way too long!
My other project was Amy Butler’s Business Card Keeper that I recently found in her free patterns. I so need one of these for work! I sewed pockets into my suit jackets, but I don’t always wear the suits. I used some scraps of Denyse Schmidt’s Katie Jump Rope fabric.
Business Card Keeper
Cute? Definitely. Functional? Well….the velcro doesn’t match up!
Little Snafu...
I think you can see it in this photo. It doesn’t match up. Not even a tiny bit, so this won’t stay closed at all. I was really surprised, as her patterns are always so detailed and precise. But I double checked and I definitely did it how it said. So, if you want to make one of these, you should put the velcro for the exterior front panel at 3 inches in from the left and 1 1/2 inches up (not 1 inch!). I’m thinking maybe I could take off the piece on the front and hand sew it back on in the correct location, but it’s too late to machine sew it. We’ll see how I feel about it. Anyone else have any other suggestions??

My other big Saturday fun is that tonight I am going to a Wardrobe Cocktails party where everyone brings their excellent condition clothing/shoes/accessories they don’t want and we swap! And eat Mexican food. And drink margaritas. Should be tons of fun!

  • Wow! I have to leave a comment because we share a lot in common! I do live 10 minutes from Santa Clara convention center and I too can’t make it because of the HW. But I made it to the Eddie’s Quilting Bee’s sale yesterday. (all the fabric is 25% off until today).

Your card keeper is really cute!

I’ve been subscribing your blog for a while. I really like your blog!!

The EXACT thing happened to me. I made the business card keeper, followed every instruction, and it doesn’t match up. I was so disappointed because I invested an entire evening working on this. I just threw it in the drawer. I’m not sure what I’ll do with it now.

  • What a bummer about the card holder! Maybe you should email her and have her switch the pattern so that other people don’t have the same frustration.

And…hemming pants…never had to do that in my life as all my pants look like cropped pants if I don’t buy the long size :) Your hemming looks great though!

I have just recently discovered your blog and am inspired by it. I just bought four pairs of pants that need hemming. I’ve never hemmed my own before, just the kids many years ago, and they didn’t have to be perfect because they’d be outgrown before long. Do you have any suggestions or instructions for me? I’m scared to ruin them!
