Quilt #1 — Keep It Simple

This is the first quilt I ever made. It was a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law last year.

I really wanted to try quilting but was a little uncertain if I would have the patience for what I perceived might be some fairly significant logistical problems with all that bulk etc. I wasn’t concerned about the piecing of the quilt front. I had a feeling I would like that fine. But I hated the thought of going to all the trouble of piecing a quilt top and then finding out that I just did not have the patience for the quilting part. So I devised this simple quilt plan.

The front is one solid piece of Amy Butler fabric in a large repeating hexagon. The back is one solid piece of coordinating fabric. I just sandwiched the two pieces together and quilted between the hexagons. Voila! A quilt(er) is born.

For comparison to what I’ve done most recently, see Quilt #3.

that’s right, Amy. Remember, there are no quilting police! LOL Quilting is defined as 3 layers sewn together…try experimenting a some smaller pieces. much easier to quilt with the machine…like try postcards! see my shop quiltingcafe.etsy.com

But I warn you, quilting is an addiction or should I say collecting all the beautiful fabrics!

  • cute! This is a really great way to either show off a fabulous fabric or to practice quilting! I’d like to do something like this soon.

This is a great idea for a last minute gift! I can see this as a perfect way to make a baby quilt with two cute pieces of fabric.

  • I made a duvet cover out of this same fabric! I love it!!!
