Several weeks back I bought a bunch of fabric from a lovely woman who was de-stashing a bit. I had my eye on a bunch of reds for a quilt (which is almost done and you will see soon!). Anyhow, I wanted to wash my new fabrics before I used them and, well, something faded and made nice purple splotches on some of the other fabrics. Well, I didn’t want anything bleeding on the final quilt, so what to do? A bleed test, of course! And what’s a little scientific experiment without documentation of the results?

I unfortunately did not get a photo of the two fabrics that were the worst offenders. But you can see a couple *somewhat* problem children in this photo.
Do you see them?
Front row, second from the left. And the one in the little square dish. Also the front row, far right was a tiny bit pink.

I tested a few more while I was at it. All these were good! Excellent!
Tip: Use white containers! It really makes the color obvious. I tried initially with some small silicone containers in bright colors (I use them for individual chocolate lava cakes) and, well….impossible to tell if the water had changed colors.
Now I can rest assured that the fabrics in my quilt won’t bleed when I wash it (hopefully!).
P.S. Most of the dishes in the back two rows of the top photo are vintage Fire King custard cups. What a great use for them!
